U.S. Laws on Gender Selection – Is It Legal?
Preimplantation genetic diagnosis, PGD, is legal for gender selection, but few U.S. clinics offer it for gender selection. Those that do generally offer it for family balancing reasons only.
The American Society of Reproductive Medicine (ASRM), the largest physician-based organization focused on reproductive medicine, asserts that offering gender selection for non-medical reasons should be allowed “in carefully selected cases.” The Ethics Committee of ASRM “recognizes the serious ethical concerns” that gender selection raises and “counsels against its widespread use.”
