HRC Fertility has always been at the forefront of advanced reproduction technology. HRC Fertility established the first IVF/intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) (in vitro fertilization/intracytoplasmic sperm injection) pregnancy on the West Coast. In 1988, HRC built a state-of-the-art embryology laboratory for its assisted reproduction procedures, and the fertility clinic’s two original embryologists are still part of the HRC Fertility team in addition to five other embryologists who were added to the staff.

In 1989, HRC Fertility performed one of the first cases of preimplantation genetic diagnosis (PGD) for a sex-linked genetic disorder. Today, HRC offers gender selection — sometimes referred to as “family balancing” — via PGD, a popular options for couples desiring to choose the sex of their children. Gender selection is often used to reduce the possibility of transmitting sex-linked genetic diseases to an offspring in "at risk" couples. Other couples want to experience the joy of raising both a male and female child.

As a pioneer in infertility research, HRC Fertility in California is also offering egg freezing, called oocyte cryopreservation. Egg freezing is an important option for women who must undergo certain therapies, like chemotherapy or radiation, which can destroy their ovaries and leave them unable to produce eggs. Egg freezing gives women the opportunity to have their eggs retrieved and frozen for use in the future and even for delaying childbearing.
